HONEY MADE IN ONTARIO BY RESCUE BEES

The story of rescue bees and their honey
Nature has a clever way of ensuring it’s ongoing survival. One such phenomenon is the swarming of honey bees. It is one of Nature’s more fascinating and dazzling displays of coordinated behaviour. Swarming is the process by which honey bee colonies reproduce to form new colonies. When a honey bee colony outgrows its home, becomes too congested, or too populated for the queen’s pheromones to control the entire workforce, then the workers signal that it is time to swarm. When the queen is ready to leaves the hive, to establish a new one, she is followed by about half of the workers in a massive cloud of flying bees. The queen will find a nearby tree, land, and emit pheromones that signal the workers to cluster around her. The cluster will remain there for several hours while scout bees explore the area for a new home. For anyone not familiar with this bee behaviour, there may be a tendency to call an exterminator. Bee rescue organizations can instead be called in to coordinate the safe and humane removal and relocation of the swarm.

A proceed from each sale of the honey below helps support an organization called Toronto Bee Rescue, that specializes in free honeybee swarm removal and relocation services and humane honeybee hive removals, in the Greater Toronto Area.

All of the honey is raw and unpasteurized. Raw unpasteurized honey has naturally occurring beneficial enzymes and local pollen.
